first always returns array

It seems as though any call to first with a limit of 1 returns an array rather than a single object or nil. Is this the
desired behaviour? It's certainly not what I would have expected.
Looking at the code, it seems there intention was always to return one result but that isn't actually happening. Here's a possible fix.
